Reading on a small screen is the use people underestimate. Academic papers and technical manuals carry the generous margins that make sense on paper and swallow a third of a tablet display. Trimming them makes the text noticeably larger without touching the font size, which is why cropping is a routine step before loading a long document onto an e-reader.

Then there is the furniture: a header carrying an old company logo, a footer stamped with a draft date, a printed page number sitting where the new document does not want one. All of it trims away cleanly when content is being lifted into something else. The same applies to a book scanned open, where the curve of the facing page usually needs to go.

Cropping also standardizes a set of pages that should match but do not. Documents assembled from several scanners, or from a mix of scans and exports, often arrive with slightly different proportions on every page. Cropping each part to the same dimensions and merging afterwards produces something that reads as one document rather than a pile of separate ones.

The four fields cut inward from each edge in millimeters, so the numbers describe what you are removing rather than what you are keeping. An A4 page is 210 mm across and 297 mm tall, and a typical document margin runs about 25 mm, which makes 25 in all four fields a reasonable first attempt at removing the whole white border. For a scan, measure roughly against the ruler in your viewer instead of guessing.

Work in one or two passes rather than trying to be exact immediately. Nothing you upload is modified, so an overly aggressive crop costs you nothing beyond running the tool again with smaller numbers. Starting conservatively and tightening is faster than starting tight and discovering you have clipped the last line of a paragraph.

The values apply uniformly to every page, which is the main limitation to plan around. A document whose first page is a cover with different proportions, or a report that switches to landscape halfway through, will not crop correctly in one pass. Split it, crop each part with its own values, then merge the results back together. It is also worth cropping before adding page numbers or watermarks, since both are positioned relative to the page edge and will land in the wrong place if the edge moves afterwards.

A cropped page is a smaller page, and that has consequences at the printer. Trim 25 mm off each side of an A4 sheet and the document is no longer A4, so a print driver will either scale it back up to fill the paper or center it and add fresh white space around the edges. Neither is wrong, but both surprise people who expected the trimmed version to print exactly as it appeared on screen. If the document is going to paper, decide the finished page size deliberately and crop to it.

Viewer support is worth a thought too. The crop box is a standard instruction and every mainstream reader honors it, but some thumbnail generators, image converters, and older mobile apps read the full media box instead and will happily show you the uncropped page. If a specific downstream system has to see the trimmed version, test that system rather than assuming.

Quality is not a concern. No re-rendering happens at any point, so text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution, and a cropped page is exactly as sharp as it was before. Annotations and form fields stay attached where they always were, although anything sitting close to an edge may now fall outside the visible area, which is easy to miss on a document that has been signed or commented on.
